Total volume answers only one question
Weight multiplied by reps and sets is a useful description of work performed. It is not a complete definition of progress. A week with more tonnage may reflect a heavier leg press, extra isolation work or simply a longer session.
None of those automatically means the whole training plan improved.
Large exercises can dominate the number
Leg press volume can dwarf lateral raises or curls because the external load is much larger. If one lower-body exercise increases, total weekly volume may rise sharply while chest, back and shoulders remain unchanged.
More total work is not the same as broader progress.
Use three performance signals together
Strength
Can the user move more load, or produce a better estimated strength result at a comparable exercise and technique?
Rep capacity
Can the user complete more useful reps at the same load, or complete the same target with cleaner effort?
Useful volume
Is a muscle group receiving an appropriate and sustainable amount of work over time?
Track at the muscle and movement level
Session names are unstable. A pull workout may use different exercises because equipment is occupied, the user changes gyms or the plan is shortened. The exact exercise changed, but the back still received vertical and horizontal pulling work.
A stronger system follows the chain from set to exercise, movement pattern and muscle group. That makes progress more robust when the session changes.
Context changes the interpretation
Completion and effort should not be hidden inside a single progress number. They help explain confidence. Rising volume with falling strength, low completion and many Max sets may be fatigue-driven rather than clean progress.
Bodyweight and training phase can matter too. During a cut, a small drop in absolute strength may coexist with improved strength relative to bodyweight.
What the user should see
The final output does not need to expose every calculation. Clear language is more useful:
- Back strength is rising.
- Chest rep capacity improved.
- Lower-body workload increased; upper body is steady.
- Output is up, but effort is running high.
Setern’s approach is to keep the underlying data detailed while presenting the meaning calmly. The goal is not to remove volume. It is to stop one large number from pretending to be the whole story.
